Working Methods

Games Designer/Animator
Games design has many different areas to look at as there are many processes and stages involved in the design and creation of games. They are responsible for deciding what their game will involve in terms of gameplay and how it looks and feels. To be able to do this, they need a wide set range of skills including time management, researching and designing but most importantly they must have a full understanding of every aspect of the game. Games designers are usually involved in large projects as the majority of games take a long time to design and create from start to finish. They would also be responsible for working as part of a team where they would be responsible for a certain part of the design process such as the animation, concept art or programming.

3D Animators use a variety of software packages such as Autodesk 3DS Max and Autodesk Maya for the creation of the 3D models. Some animators also use software such as ZBrush for the creation of models using a graphics tablet which can then be imported into Maya or 3DS Max.

Various skills are required for a 3D Animator. The most obvious would be an adept use of the software packages mentioned above as you would be spending a lot of time doing this. Other skills would be knowing how the human body works or just how muscles work so that you create people and other creatures realistically. An ability to draw is not essential for a 3D animator but can be very useful in helping design the model.

Professional Ethics

Professional ethics are a set of codes or standards that you must adhere to in order to portray yourself in a suitable way for any prospective clients. In order for you to gain new and repeat business, you must not appear as dishonest or irresponsible. Respect and honesty is very important when looking for new clients as it makes them feel comfortable with hiring you. The way you look is also a very important aspect. A person who is well groomed and professional looking is more likely to be hired that someone who does not look professional. Many companies have a policy in place to ensure that their employees promote a corporate image to all their clients that they are a professional, honest and very competent company who are likely to get the work they need done quickly and efficiently. If you are self employed however, it is how you as a person portrays yourself to prospective clients that is the key in gaining or losing their business.

Legal and Financial Issues

There are many legal and financial issues in the media business. Many large companies have their own legal teams in place or at least a set of lawyers that they deal with on a regular basis. Lawsuits can arise over a number of things such as copyright issues over a piece or piece of work that the company has done or possibly breaches in contract where one party has not adhered to the strict rules bound to them legally by a contract. Being self employed can be different as you will not have a legal team that can help you in case of these so you need to ensure that you are adhering to any contracts that you have made as this will not only stop lawsuits against you, but also give you a legal leg to stand on in the case of a breach of contract by your client.

You are also responsible for making sure that you have paid and declared the correct amount of tax each year. You are legally responsible for this and it could cost you thousands if you do not do this. Larger companies have more taxes to deal with such as property taxes and taxes on their profits which they will have dedicated finance teams that will deal with this.

Health and Safety

Many companies must ensure that they have measures in place to ensure the safety of their employees. Different types of organisations have a different set of rules, for example, a warehouse based company will have to comply with health and safety rules that may include wearing safety clothing as they will be dealing with heavy items that could cause damage. The use of computer in the creative industries is very important as the programmes needed are all computer based. This means that the most important health and safety issues are revolved around this for a company to follow. Every employee must have a comfortable workstation that causes them the least amount of harm during usage everyday. This can include a comfortable and ergonomic chair, appropriate lighting and safety checked hardware. They are also responsible for giving you breaks from working on the computer for a prolonged period of time as this can cause long term health issues.
The company must also be responsible for risk assessments in the work place, examples of this are evacuation procedures that must be clearly laid out and given to each employee so that they are aware of what they need to do in case of a fire or emergency. This can include multiple exits from the building, ensuring nothing is blocking fire exits or would otherwise hinder the ability to evacuate the building.

Being self employed means that you are responsible for ensuring that you are comfortable in your workplace and that your equipment is safe and comfortable to use.
